Audrey Smith of Walla Walla, Wash., was selected as the second recipient of the Keith R. Olsen Agricultural Policy Internship Award at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.

USDA has announced it will require full environmental impact statements for new corn, soybean and cotton crops developed through biotechnology. Farm Bureau is questioning why the additional requirements beyond the normal environmental assessments are necessary.

Agriculture got a boost this week with the Senate’s passage of the Water Resources Development Act (WRDA). The measure would authorize new projects for flood protection, port improvements and upgrades to the nation’s aging locks and dams infrastructure. In a bonus for farmers, the Senate added an amendment to the bill that would help provide relief from EPA’s oil spill regulations.
