YOUNG FARMERS & RANCHERS COMPETITIONS

The state Young Farmers and Ranchers Committee and the national YF&R Committee sponsor three annual competitions, which recognize outstanding young members and help to build their leadership abilities.

Discussion Meet
In this competition, young farmers & ranchers are judged on their ability to express ideas and opinions on the biggest issues affecting agriculture today. Contestants prepare by researching and thinking about the issues posed by the four Discussion Meet questions selected for each year’s contest. State winners receive $500, a trip to the next American Farm Bureau convention, and a chance to compete for a new Dodge Ram 2500 pickup in the national finals.

Achievement Award
In this competition, judges from outside of Farm Bureau evaluate the operating efficiency, goal setting and achievement, community service and service to Farm Bureau of the young farmers & ranchers who enter the contest. Selection is based on leadership, creativity and proven success. State winners receive $500, a trip to the next American Farm Bureau convention, and a chance to compete for a new Dodge Ram 2500 pickup in the national contest.

Excellence in Agriculture Award
This contest is designed for young farmers and ranchers who do not earn the majority of their income from an owned agriculture operation. Participants will be judged on their involvement in agriculture, leadership ability and involvement and participation in Farm Bureau and other organizations.
