Winter wheat conditions in Nebraska for the week ending December 31 rated 4 percent very poor, 12 percent poor, 36 percent fair, 35 percent good, and 13 percent excellent. . . The Environmental Protection Agency approved an exemption to allow the use metamitron herbicide in sugar beets. The product may be used in Banner, Box Butte, Chase, Cheyenne, Dawes, Deuel, Garden, Keith, Kimball, Morrill, Perkins, Scotts Bluff, Sheridan, and Sioux Counties . . . Nebraska feedlots, with capacities of 1,000 or more head, held 2.58 million cattle on December 1 according to the USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS), down 1 percent from the prior year . . . Nebraska’s inventory of hogs and pigs on December 1 was 3.80 million head according to NASS, up 6 percent from the prior year . . . The results of the presidential election in Taiwan, taking place on January 13, bears watching regarding implications for the U.S.-China agricultural trade. The leading candidate is “pro-independence” and antithetical to the Chinese Communist Party. The U.S. is a supporter of Taiwan and election outcome could raise geopolitical tensions in the region.
