Pricing Calves in an Uncertain Market

Many ranch operations are in the midst of spring calving. Ranchers, besides managing for the health and welfare of their herd, need to consider marketing and pricing alternatives for spring born calves. Current volatile markets, rising feed costs, and lingering drought conditions will bring production challenges this year. Matching market conditions to appropriate marketing practices will be particularly important to improve operation returns.

Nebraska Farm Bureau’s Inside Profitability Series webinar on March 30, 2022, at noon CDT will focus on marketing and pricing spring born calves. The webinar, featuring Elliott Dennis and Jay Parsons, professors in the Department of Agricultural Economics at the University of Nebraska, will explore strategies ranchers can use to reduce risk and achieve profitable outcomes. Participants will get to know the factors affecting cattle markets, learn about tools to manage price risk, and hear about the impact of high-priced corn on feeder cattle demand.
