Box Butte County Farm Bureau Celebrates National Ag Week in the Classroom

HEMINGFORD, NEB. – Box Butte County Farm Bureau members were busy during National Ag Week, March 18-24, visiting all seven third-grade classrooms in Alliance, and two fourth grade classes in Hemingford, giving students a glimpse of how important agriculture is to the state and Box Butte County.

“We handed out Farm Bureau ‘goodie’ bags, read them the book, ‘From Farm to Table,’ and talked to the students about agriculture in Nebraska and what grows and is raised in Box Butte County. The visits were eye opening and a lot of fun,” said Natasha Schumacher, president Box Butte County Farm Bureau.

Farmers and ranchers quietly go about their business of producing the bounty that consumers hardly give a thought to when they stroll down the fully stocked aisles of the grocery store—not to mention the wood that goes into our homes, the fiber in our clothes, and even the fuel in our cars. We thought it was important for members of Box Butte County Farm Bureau to share knowledge about food and fiber with our future decision makers.

“Farmers and ranchers are so good at what they do, the average person has no idea how much goes into it. National Ag Week and Ag Day are about engaging consumers, children and their parents about where their food, fiber and fuel come from, so maybe they’ll give it a thought the next time they walk down the grocery aisle and think about Nebraska farmers and ranchers,” Schumacher said.

Box Butte County Farm Bureau members Natasha Schumacher and Tricia Schumacher visited classrooms and enjoyed the children’s questions about food, crops and livestock. Jeff and Natasha Schumacher also attended the Box Butte County 4-H Fundraiser dinner where Box Butte County Farm Bureau presented a check for $600 to the 4-H Council for the youth Quality Assurance testing program, which is required for anyone wanting to show livestock at the fair.
