Nebraska’s total hog inventory as of March 1 was 3.55 million head, 3 percent more than last year. Nebraska’s breeding herd was 7 percent greater, and market inventory was 2 percent more than last year at 3.1 million head.

Milk production in Nebraska during the January-March 2019 quarter totaled 357 million pounds, down 2 percent from the January-March quarter last year. The average number of milk cows was 59,000 head, 1,000 head less than the same period last year.

Layers in Nebraska during March 2019 totaled 8.49 million, up from 7.69 million the previous year. Nebraska egg production during March totaled 215 million eggs, or 113 eggs for each Nebraskan, up from 198 million in 2018.

Commercial red meat production in Nebraska (beef, veal, pork, lamb, and mutton) in March equaled 623 million pounds, down 7 percent from production in March 2018. Red meat production in the U.S. in the first quarter of 2019 was 13.3 billion pounds, up 1 percent from last year.
