Hearings Next Week on Property Tax Increases 

You may have received a postcard saying your property taxes will be raised by more than two percent (2%) and there is a public hearing about the increase. The reason for the postcard is because of a change in state law that requires counties to notify property taxpayers when the property tax asking has increased by more than 2% over real growth. 

Nebraska Start-Up Named Top 10 Finalist in Ag Innovation Challenge 

Idem Irrigation, based in Gering, Neb., was selected as a top 10 finalist in the Farm Bureau Ag Innovation Challenge. They have been awarded $10,000 and will compete for the top spot at the American Farm Bureau Annual Convention in January. 

Sen. Briese Tapped for State Treasurer 

Governor Pillen announced his appointment of Senator Tom Briese as state treasurer. Briese will assume the duties of the office on Nov. 1. He will complete the remaining term of John Murante, who will become director of the Nebraska Public Employees Retirement Systems (NPERS).  

EPA Extends Herbicide Comment Period 

Farm Bureau’s ask of the EPA to extend the public comment period for their proposed Herbicide Strategy under the Endangered Species Act has been answered. The proposed rule could impact farmers who use conventional herbicides. 

USDA Milk Loss Program Final Rule Released 

Earlier this week, FSA released their final rule regarding the “Milk Loss Program and Emergency Relief Program”. This rule establishes qualification criteria and the value formula for how assistance money will be distributed. The deadline for applications is October 16. Get all the details in this story.
